I recently went to a local Autocross event held by the Atlanta Region SCCA. At this event, we drive our cars as fast as we can around an array of cones, timing from the beginning to the end of the course to see who is the fastest. There is an aspect of competition, but since there are no prizes to speak of, we are just in it for the fun and practice. We do this on a fixed schedule during the season except for the winter. As it is now spring time, the season is picking back up into full swing again with events being held about every two weeks at Turner Field.

The cars we bring are the cars we typically drive back home as well, so it is cheap and easy to transport and compete, and the entrance cost to the event is only $30 for the day if you are an SCCA member. An SCCA membership costs $100 a year and pays for itself in the benefits and things you receive from it. Another way we keep the cost down is by having the drivers also be the cone workers for when someone runs a cone over. We don't need to hire helpers as the drivers chip in and work on the track when we aren't driving. It keeps the sport a cheap, fun, and fast way to get the urge to drive fast out of your system on a track, and not on the street, all while meeting great people that share a love of cars.
